Kal Eliya village is located in Mirigama constituency of Gampaha District, Western Province. When the Muslims settled here in the 13th century, no educational institution was maintained for them. People who are interested in education went to foreign places to learn and progress in many fields, which brought about educational awareness in Kal-Eliya village. In the year 1934, with the aim of starting a stone shop here, Kal - Eliya Muslim.
An organization called Sangam was formed. Due to the tireless efforts of the members of this association, on 02 May 1938, a building was built with 70 students, with Mr. John Steven Fernando from Negombo as the headmaster.
The school was officially opened under the name Kal-Eliya Government Tamil Mixed School. Ms. Mabel Fernandu was appointed as its assistant teacher.
The school gradually grew and in 1952 the SSC classes were started in 1953 as students appeared for the JSC examination. In 1957, the name of this school was changed to 'Muslim Mixed School' by the government.
In the year 1959, the classes for Kal-Eliya Muslim Women's Arabic College were also started in this school with the support of the school principal and teachers. Seeing the growth of the school, the education department upgraded the school to Muslim Maha Vidyalaya from 1st March 1961. After 1965 the school saw rapid growth. In the same year the name of the school was changed to Aligarh Maha Vidyalaya. High quality classes were started in the arts and commerce sections in this school. After this the students of Near Village also sought this school for higher quality education.
